Monument Preservation Certification

Monument preservation aka Monument perpetuation in San Diego

What is a Monument?

In surveying, monuments are objects in or on the ground ranging in various types or sizes that establish the boundary lines of a property. Monuments can be small like a tack in a lead plug or large round nail with print on it. Monuments establish both public and private property lines, so you can find them everywhere if you know what to look for.

What is Monement Preservation?

Monument perpetuation is a City of San Diego requirement that all monuments located near construction must be preserved from destruction or removal due to construction by a licensed Land Surveyor. We have a dedicated monument preservation team, so we are able to quickly send a surveyor out to verify monumentation, that way your project won’t be put on hold. We at KAPPA have broken a monument preservation survey down into two phases which include Pre-Construction Services and Post-Construction Services.

Under Pre-Construction Services, we will perform the following:

  • Research survey records to see if there was any monumentation set at the location of the proposed improvements.
  • Site visit to verify any existing monumentation that will be potentially destroyed by construction.

  1. If we do NOT observe any monuments that may be potentially destroyed we will sign and stamp your Construction Plan and our services are complete.
  2. If we observe that there will be monuments that may be potentially destroyed we will prepare and submit a Corner Record Map of existing monumentation, then sign and stamp your Construction Plan.

Under Post-Construction Services, we will perform the following:

  • Site visit after construction is complete to verify if found monumentation was destroyed.

  1. If we observe that all of the previously found monuments are still existing we will submit a certification letter to the City declaring no monumentation was destroyed.
  2. If we observe that any of the previously found monuments were destroyed we will reset the destroyed monuments and prepare another Corner Record Map.
